Castle of St. Vith
In July 2020, exploratory excavations uncovered remains of the walls of the former castle and fortress wall of St. Vith.
During archaeological excavations from September 2024, the first finds (including jugs from the late Middle Ages) were discovered on the castle grounds of St. Vith. These confirm that the castle was built between 1352 and 1354.
The south tower and several walls were completely uncovered during excavation work.
The interior of the south tower was also cleared of soil. This revealed a well-preserved section of the inner vault, which provides new insights into the construction method.
There is also growing evidence that parts of the castle were used until 1945, possibly as storage rooms. Among other things, the excavation team discovered a rainwater drainage channel, which presumably dates back to the lords of Monschaw.
At the end of the excavation phase, the town of St. Vith will be responsible for the preservation and future use of the site.
